Steam measurement

Steam meter for the measurement of water vapour

Steam is of enormous importance especially in the energy industry. Even small volumes can transport a lot of energy, e.g. as working fluid for steam turbines, for heating purposes or as process steam in a wide variety of industries from the food and paper industry to automotive construction and process engineering. The demand for solutions for accurate billing is increasing, as the producer is usually not the consumer himself. However, the basis for billing is often very unclear because steam measurements cannot be approved. This is clearly defined in the Verification Ordinance (Measuring and Verification Ordinance – Mess EV). However, experience has shown that measurements based on the differential pressure principle are best suited for accounting measurements and high-quality balancing and control measurements.

The quality of a steam measurement is characterised by optimum adaptation to the respective operating conditions.

It is important that the following questions, among others, are clarified before sizing:

  • How much straight inlet distance is available?
  • Which pressure loss is allowed for the measurement?
  • How large should the measurement uncertainty be?
  • How large should the measuring range be?
  • What is the availability of the measurement?

It is our claim to design every steam measurement according to the above criteria in such a way that it offers our customers the optimum benefit.

The following meters in our portfolio are suitable for steam energy/flow measurements:

The following is a selection of some typical applications

Steam condensate measurements
Steam condensate measurements

Steam condensate measurements for balancing and control purposes in companies (energy management, CO2 emissions trading)

  • Type: e.g. EDZ 127.1 with compact orifice and condensate feeding with
    ultrasonic meter EWZ 812
  • Feature: Determinaton of transmitted heat energy and volume
  • Design: up to 350°C and PN40, with built-in pressure sensor
  • Meas. range: 30:1 rel. on mass flow
  • Uncertainty: <1% with respect to a range of 15:1

The product quality depends very much on the accuracy of the steam measurement. The steam measurement must be able to react very quickly to pressure changes.

  • Type: EDZ 120.1 with compact orifice and integrated pabs transmitter
  • Characteristic: very short reaction times due to integrated pressure transmitter small inlet distances, minimal pressure losses
  • Design: up to 350°C and PN40
  • Meas. range: 30:1 relative to mass flow
  • Uncertainty: <1% with respect to a range of 15:1
